The National Federation of Coffee Growers is reporting that "optimal" weather and efficient use of fertilizer will result in a 41% bump in coffee production this year, up from a 33-year low the preceding year.
"We’ve had optimal conditions for the main crop," Juan Lucas Restrepo, the group’s head of marketing told reporters.
Restrepo estimated that this year’s crop would return to 11 million bags, up from just 7.8 million a year ago. This is still lower than 2007 and 2008, which saw crops of 12.6 million bags and 11.5 million bags respectively.
Colombia is the world’s second-largest producer of the arabica variety of coffee beans.
