Green tea may help guard against glaucoma and other eye diseases, according to a report published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
In the research, scientists fed green tea to animals and then analyzed their eye tissue. They found that the lens, retina, and other tissues absorbed "significant" amounts of green tea antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, that are thought to provide protection to the eye. The study discovered that the antioxidants reduced harmful oxidative stress in the eyes for up to 20 hours.
